When I first saw the bumps on these handrails, I assumed that it was a rather nice original design feature. A street cleaner then explained to me that the bumps on the rails were an after-thought, put there to deter skateboarders. It was also a good opportunity to play with f1.8.

Comments:

Great shot. Amazing DoF. I love the dark area on the right. Adds interest, and brakes up that symmetry. WONDERFUL!

spot-on with the wafer thin dof Stuart - I like your thinking and focus a lot.

I like the point of focus you chose. Very good. I agree with orange that the dark area on the right adds to the shot.

great use of selective dof

the bastards! skateboarding is not a crime! just kidding, nice shot with excellent DOF. I know I forget about my 50/1.8 lens often, but the shallow DOF can really be great.

Cool focus spot.

funny that you didnt know what they were meant for - they are on *everything* in san francisco - being the birthplace of skate boarding and all. good use of selective focus.

What a great choice of subject with a cool and interesting result. I never would have thought to shoot something like this.

i have had bad experiences with those things =( but the photo is cool...nice tones and the DoF is razor thin...it almost seems thinner than f/1.8.

Love the narrow DOF, very nice shot.

Yes, I agree with earlier comments - Well done for getting that dark area on the right to break up the symetry. Your 'art eye' really comes in to play in your photography, as witnessed here!

Nice focusing.
